The Gospel of Pragmatism
, Pragmatism is the idea that if something happens it doesn’t really matter how it happened or who did it, as long as it happened. THAT is what is important. Basically as long the “effect” is achieved, it’s no big deal. I was speaking with a dear left leaning friend of mine who has this approach to most problems or opportunities. He is a strong believer in Jesus and loves him dearly. During our conversation he said something like- “I really want Good to happen in the world and I’m not so much concerned about how it happens. As long the poor are helped and people’s needs are met, I’m good with it and I think God is too.
I took issue with him in a very important way. If a “God thing” happens, something that is OF God, that comes from his nature or attributes (LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PROVISION, JUSTICE etc), and God does NOT get credit for it, does He care? Of course NOT. But that is not the point. God does not NEED the credit or Glory for Good that happens in the world, but He definitely deserves, and is entirely worthy of it.
But that is isn’t where it ends. For God and His Kingdom to be advanced BY THE CHURCH, (Eph 3:10), it is very important and necessary that WE makes sure he DOES get the credit. Because OUR mission is to advance HIM, to display HIS glory. Our very lives are designed by Him for his glory or credit.
|15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God…..
So it is very important that when something Good happens, the “Good God” gets the credit.
If God didn’t do it he “caused” it, if he didn’t cause it, He provided the talent, skill resources opportunity etc, for it to happen. Apart from Him we can NO (Good) thing.
