THOSE IN GOVERNMENT MUST UNDERSTAND THEY ARE PLACED THERE BY GOD
OUR ROLE IS TO VOTE FOR THOSE WHO UNDERSTAND THIS.
1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4 For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.
This point is also made by Jesus to Pilate the Roman Governor in John;s Gospel: Chapter 19
10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.
So you can see that those in government have power which is given from above, from God. It is the job of Christians to engage in government as God leads and to serve there as God leads them. If you have been called to serve in Government or get involved politically, you have an obligation WAAAAY beyond any party affiliation. You are to be SALT and LIGHT, because that is who you are.
In our show this week we discuss how government and politics is a “Good” thing and capable of being corrupted as any other institution. But Christians are called to transform it for the “common good”.
One More Question for Jim Skillen
Jim and I kept talking beyond our time for the show because I had one more question- what is the “calling” of citizenship?

He has written a book called “The Good of Politics”. Many Christians are involved in politics but they mistakenly take an adversarial approach as if the government were the enemy. But this approach flies in the face Romans Chapter 13
